Le Chat Noir

the hunt is the honeymoon

Giancarlo Bellafortuna — a crooner who prefers the hunt to the kill, age withheld on principle, the face on loan from better-looking dead men. He is not looking for the one woman who ends the looking; he is after the millionth part, the thing in each that exists in no other, and he knows he will never keep it. The chase is the only room in the house with the lights on.

Italian crooner-pop that never arrives where it's going — the velvet croon, the samba sway, and the 4 a.m. dancefloor, danceable and grieving at once, in the Gainsbourg-coded tradition of seduction as an art form.

A Voice Built to Approach

One man, and the band behind the approach. Age withheld, on principle; the face on loan; the voice his own.

THE LORE

The Millionth Part

There are two kinds of men who chase women, and Le Chat Noir is exhaustively, almost academically, the second kind. The first is the romantic, looking for the woman who will finally end the looking. The second is not looking for the one woman at all — he is looking for the millionth part, the specific way she says no before she says it again differently, and he knows, going in, that he will never possess it, because the moment it is possessed it stops being the thing he wanted. He does not chase because he is hungry. He chases because the chase is the only room in the house with the lights on.

There was, once, an exception — and it is the reason there is a record he keeps buried. When he was young he loved an older woman, the Malèna of his life, the one he actually arrived at; and she broke him so completely and so beautifully that he has spent every approach since making sure he never arrives again. Malena Mia is the song he wrote for her. He will not release it. He says a man is allowed one wound he does not turn into a performance — and that, of all the women he has sung to, she is the only one he was ever faithful to, by never writing it down where you could hear it.

FROM THE SHELF

The Extras

The small stubborn objects and the lyric books — some free, some sold out, some lost. Scarcity is part of the record.

🚬

The Glasses Never His to Take

One of his three objects — a pair of women's reading glasses, left on a bar once and never claimed. He keeps them not as a trophy but as a reminder: the things you do not take are the only ones you get to keep.

The Bellafortuna Doctrine

Nine findings on desire, by a man never once satisfied — the croon, the samba, the floor at four a.m., and the courtesy of not succeeding. Liner-bound, smells of smoke and citrus.
